Sashiko Pear Pouch Diamonds

A$120.00

A small, quilted, hand stitched linen crossbody pouch which will comfortably fit a phone, keys and wallet (I can even squeeze in a pair of glasses!) The bag is slightly wider at the base with a two inch gusset, giving it an adorable pear shape! The natural materials and generous wool wadding make it pillowy, soft and comfortable to carry while the narrow opening and snap button secure your valuables inside.

I've carefully sourced the highest quality materials that I can find so this product is durable, safe against your skin and environmentally sustainable. The outer and lining fabrics are 100% laundered and Oeko - Tex certified, European flax linens from Merchant and Mills in the UK and the dyes on the cloths are GOTS certified. The embroidery is made with 100% cotton Japanese sashiko threads, I sew with cotton thread only, the batting is pure wool and the loops and dees are solid, sand cast brass. The dees are nice and heavy and I like the way the brass contrasts with the rough, slubby texture of the loose weave linens. These items contain no synthetic fibers which means they break down quickly in the environment without despoiling the earth for thousands of years or contributing to microplastic pollution.

The adjustable strap is roughly 130 cms long and can be shortened using the brass triglide so you can wear the pouch as a shoulder bag as well as a crossbody bag. The bag outer is 185 gsm aubergine linen and the lining is 160 gsm brown and blue checked linen. The patchwork face is a combination of the two.

This is a zero waste pouch which I've created by turning small linen offcuts into a patchwork and then superimposing the patchwork design with a simple, geometric, sashiko motif. The idea behind the process is that with creativity and intention it is possible to produce something very special and enduring from scraps that others might discard. I'm inspired by the philosophy informing sashiko practice, within which the resources we borrow from our earth are respected and used conservatively.

Washing Instructions

Cool hand wash using a ph neutral detergent. Lie flat to dry, away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry. Linen gradually softens with each wash, do not use fabric softeners because they coat the flax fibers and prevent them from softening naturally. After washing, the cloth will seize up and become coarse, then soften with use. This is not a fault, it's normal for a good quality linen fabric to do this. After washing, polish the brass dees and slider with brass polish, being careful not to get polish on the fabric. Use a white, cotton pressing cloth when ironing to avoid discoloration, or simply enjoy the effortless and poetic lineny creases just as they are!
