Sashiko Moon Linen Wall Hanging
A pure linen and linen lined wall hanging made of small offcuts stitched together, overlayed with a sashiko moon motif. The fabric is red brown and aubergine linen with a solid red brown linen backing. The cloth is attached to a timber dowel with a leather cord, ready to hang from a small picture hook in your wall.
I've carefully sourced the highest quality materials that I can find so this product is durable and environmentally sustainable. The outer and lining fabrics are 100% laundered and Oeko - Tex certified, European flax linens from Merchant and Mills in the UK and the dyes on the cloths are GOTS certified. These fabrics are woven in a mill powered by green energy! The embroidery is made with 100% cotton Japanese sashiko thread and I sew seams with cotton thread only. The dowels are timber and the cord is cow leather, both are sourced from local Australian small businesses. This item contains no synthetic fibers, which means it will break down quickly in the environment without despoiling the earth for thousands of years or contributing to microplastic pollution.
This is a zero waste piece which I've created by turning small linen scraps into a patchwork, superimposed with a simple, geometric, sashiko motif. The idea behind the process is that with creativity and intention it is possible to produce something very special and enduring from scraps that others might discard. I'm inspired by the philosophy informing sashiko practice, within which the resources we borrow from our earth are respected and used conservatively. The moon motif represents change and adaptation, mirroring the way the moon shifts quietly and effortlessly through its cycles. One of my life lessons is recognising that change is good!!
