Mixy Matchy Billow Sleeve Top

A$140.00

Introducing my zero waste, pure linen top! This is a patchwork design I came up with to ensure that my sewing practice is sustainable as well as creative.

When you cut out a dress pattern, you end up with fabric scraps of various shapes and sizes. A commercial manufacturer discards those scraps, but being a small, creative business owner, I’m in a position to do something with them. I cut the scraps into squares and rectangles and sew them together to make a piece of fabric large enough to cut a pattern from! It’s an irregular, unpremeditated patchwork technique in which something beautiful and enduring is created from what many would see as waste. The idea came from the traditional Korean Jogakbo technique in which fabric scraps are joined in an improvisational manner until the desired size is reached. My Mixy Matchies have a folksy, peasanty, spontaneous feeling and a lovely substantial weight due to the fabric overlap on the joins.

I wear my Mixy Matchy Billow Sleeve Top absolutely all the time because it’s so freeing and fun! It’s a relatively short top with a lovely gather and three quarter, drop shoulder sleeves which billow out close to the cuff. I can’t stand tight, restrictive clothes so I’ve made this design loose and super comfy! The breathable natural fibers will keep you cool in summer and there’s room for a long sleeve tee underneath if you need an extra layer in the cooler months. I sew vintage seams instead of using an over locker so the inside of the top is just as beautifully crafted as the outside, adding a level of care, handmadeness and old world longevity to your clothing!

I’ve used sustainably and ethically sourced, 100% linen fabrics from Merchant and Mills in the UK and there is a description on the Shop Clothing section of my website of each cloth along with it’s eco credentials. They are light to medium weight linens, 155 - 185 gsm, completely biodegradable and pigmented with AZO free dyes. This product is carefully researched and crafted so as to be durable, safe for your body and for our precious earth.

All four tops are a very permissive medium. Over time, I will create a full range of sizes, but in the interim, if you send me your measurements and fabric preferences, I’m happy to make the perfect Mixy Matchy just for you!

Linen naturally seizes up and becomes stiff and coarse after washing, then relaxes and softens when you put the garment on. This is not a fault! If you follow the care instructions closely, the flax fibers will gradually soften with every wash. I’ve used laundered linen, meaning that it is pre-shrunk, but it can still shrink a small amount during the first few washes so best to size up instead of down if you are unsure.

Washing and Care

Wash on a cool, delicate cycle with ph neutral detergent. Don’t use fabric softeners because they coat the flax fibers and prevent them from softening naturally. Dry flat or on a hanger, do not tumble dry, do not dry in direct sunlight. If you need to iron, use a protective white cotton cloth between the iron and the garment to avoid discolouration.
